Icon-Sport Flying Made Simple

Nothing about the Icon is really groundbreaking?it’s a fairly conventional two-seat light sport aircraft in most ways?but its sleek design and nifty electric folding wings combined with a high-powered marketing campaign, aim to attract a new cohort of buyers. The Icon appeals to adventurous types who might add it to a toy collection that already includes boats, jet skis, and motorcycles. With wings folded, it’s easy to load onto a trailer, and if there is no convenient airport, it can land in a lake. The interior feels more like an automobile than an airplane cockpit. A prototype is already flying, and deliveries are expected to start in late 2010. The Icon starts at about $139,000, and refundable deposits are being taken now. (424.201.3505, www.iconaircraft.com)
