A Pair of Jags for Sale

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the E-Type Jaguar, and Bonhams auction house will give collectors two reasons to celebrate when it auctions a pair of spectacular examples on September 16 during the Goodwood Revival rally at the Goodwood Estate in Chichester, West Sussex, England.

The Sir Robert Ropner “Semi-Lightweight” E-Type is named for its first owner, a shipping company magnate who savored every chance he got to approach its top speed of 165 mph. The “Semi-Lightweight” appellation refers to its composition: unlike the 12 aluminum “Lightweight” E-types that Jaguar built for the 1963 international motor racing season, the semi-lightweight combined a steel-skinned chassis with an aluminum hood and trunk lid.

Also on offer is a 1958 knobbly-bodied Lister Jaguar that was purchased by Briggs Cunningham and raced by his legendary namesake motorsports team. The “knobbly” appellation refers to the exaggerated curves in the car’s chassis. Bonhams is declining to publish presale estimates for the Jaguars. Interested bidders should contact the house directly. (www.bonhams.com)
