When it comes to its size, stature, and sticker price, the Bentley Mulsanne is unquestionably the flagship sedan in the British automaker’s lineup of stalwart vehicles. The Flying Spur, however, while smaller in size, comes with a bigger W-12 engine, which in turn produces more horsepower. For some, these numbers are trivial when looking at overall luxury; but Bentley wanted to provide the 4-year-old Mulsanne model with an additional boost of power and exclusivity for 2015 (as a 2016 model). Enter the Bentley Mulsanne Speed.
This upgraded iteration of the Mulsanne now carries the most powerful iteration of Bentley’s 6.75-liter pushrod V-8 engine, which represents Bentley’s heritage, as it is an evolved version of an engine created 55 years ago. The engine is equipped with twin turbochargers and new combustion chambers, intake ports, and spark plugs. This Speed treatment results in a power increase to 530 hp and a tire-shredding 811 ft lbs of torque. Even with the boost in performance, the Mulsanne Speed still differentiates itself with extreme exclusivity; over 90 individual options are available to owners. This includes world-class interior leather treatments (fitted from 14 bull hides), carbon-fiber interior trim, and a vast array of specialty paint. With the advances on the standard Mulsanne, it follows that the Mulsanne Speed tops that model’s $303,700 price with a sticker of $335,600. Deliveries begin in the first half of next year.
