Bentley’s Continental GT is a four-seat two-door. The Bentley Continental Flying Spur is a four-seat four-door. Assumption: Bentley is trading on the success of the GT by cutting two more holes in its fuselage, installing a brace of doors, and calling it the Flying Spur.
Wrong. Although the Spur shares 60 percent of its mechanicals with the GT, it is almost two feet longer and three inches taller than the GT. All that extra room proves that the Spur is a large, triple-distilled, opera-attending luxury sedan, while the Continental GT is the smaller, fun-loving roué.
Despite a three-ton bulk and 17-foot length, the Spur will outrun a cheetah, because up front is a biturbo W-12 developing 552 hp. A top speed of 195 mph makes it the quickest street car ever built by Bentley. And it goes without saying—but we’ll say it anyway—that the $165,000 Flying Spur is faithful to every essence of the big, suave, opulent, fast, rather exclusive, terribly handsome, and very British Bentleys.
