Best of the Best 2012: Sedans: Porsche Panamera GTS

The latest and eighth addition to the carmaker’s four-door-coupe model line, the Porsche Panamera GTS (www.porsche.com) should resonate with 911 owners—the Porsche purists. Equipped with a naturally aspirated 4.8-liter V-8 engine, the $109,000 Panamera GTS sits one slot below the Panamera Turbo models in terms of performance (and pricing). The automobile’s front-mounted engine produces 430 hp, enabling the GTS to achieve a zero-to-60-mph time of 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 178 mph. This performance increase over the Porsche Panamera 4S (which has a zero-to-60-mph time of 4.8 seconds and a top speed of 175 mph) comes from a series of tuning measures that include modified intake camshafts and a new air-induction system. Enhancing these improvements is a sport exhaust system that features matte black tailpipes made from stainless-steel alloy. In Sport and Sport Plus modes, the automobile’s finely tuned exhaust produces the sound of a track-day car, announcing that the GTS is not a Sunday-cruise saloon; it is a bona fide Porsche.
