A quick, responsive, no-nonsense machine reminiscent of the days when we would run what we brung, the Porsche 911 GT3 (www​.porsche.com) is built for owners who enjoy spending weekends on racetracks flogging their cars. Expect no luxuries in this two-seater that has been in production since 1999 and has a starting price of about $130,000: no sunroof, no 12-speaker sound system, no heavy-padded seats, but the options list does include a six-point harness and a roll cage. The suspension is taut, and a huge, fixed rear wing produces so much downforce that it feels as though a tank has fallen on the car’s tail.

The 911 GT3’s new 7-speed dual-clutch PDK transmission is programmed for silky shifts that are completed in 0.10 second. It is paired with an equally new 3.8-liter flat-6 engine that produces 475 hp. However, Porsche is replacing the engines on the first 785 GT3s that it produced to correct a flaw that in two instances led to oil leaks, which in turn caused fires.
