FrontRunner: Good Things Come in Threes

Although one of the newest Mercedes-Benz models tops out at just 10 mph and produces only 0.75 hp, the history behind it accounts for the $50,000 price tag: It is the marque’s oldest machine, a three-wheeler that Karl Benz first drove in 1886.

In 2002, Mercedes-Benz is producing 85 replicas of the 1886 Benz, which will be delivered throughout the year. Thirty-two of the replicas have been sold to U.S. dealers. The Mercedes-Benz Classic Center USA (866.622.5277) is also accepting private orders, although the company will most likely not be able to produce more replicas until next year. The original three-wheeler is on display at the Deutsches Museum in Munich.
