Like the original Shelby Mustang from 45 years ago, the 2011 Shelby GT350 (gt350.shelbyamerican.com) begins as a basic Mustang GT and is transformed post-purchase into a purpose-built muscle car by Shelby American. The company’s factory supercharges Ford’s new lightweight, aluminum, 5-liter V-8, increasing its horsepower to 500 or more. In addition to the blue racing stripes (a nod to the 1965 GT350), a center-exit exhaust further distinguishes the new GT350 from the standard Mustang. The car is equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, a racing-style suspension, and six-piston front binders. Owners can have their 2011 Mustangs shipped directly from dealerships to Shelby American’s facility in Las Vegas for the $34,000 upgrade.
