With a power output of 200 hp and a dry weight of 342 pounds, the recently unveiled Ducati 1199 Superleggera (www.ducati.com) has the greatest power-to-weight ratio of any production motorcycle ever. But this distinction is nothing new for Ducati. When the Italian marque unveiled the 1199 Panigale in 2011, that sport bike was touted as the power-to-weight record holder before it was soon surpassed by the 1199 Panigale R—the model on which the 1199 Superleggera is based. (Leggera means “light” in Italian.)

The 1199 Superleggera (shown here without its red fairing) has a base price of $65,000. Production will be limited to 500 examples, and deliveries will begin in the spring. The bike features the same 1198 cc Superquadro L-twin engine as the Panigale R, but it generates 5 hp more. More significantly, the Superleggera is 27 pounds lighter than the Panigale R, primarily because it features a new monocoque frame that is made of magnesium instead of aluminum.
