FrontRunners: Mullin Automotive

Opened in April, the Mullin Automotive Museum (www.mullinautomotivemuseum.com) in Oxnard, Calif., displays nearly 100 vehicles from the collection of philanthropist and financial services entrepreneur Peter Mullin (see “The Robb Reader,” page 156). Mullin’s lifelong obsession with French cars from the 1920s and ’30s is apparent in the warehouselike space, where his vehicles—which include a 1937 Delahaye 135M (pictured)—are presented alongside art and furnishings from the Art Deco period. The museum’s Bugatti-themed second floor houses selections from Mullin’s 20-plus Bugatti automobiles, as well as artworks by members of the Bugatti family. “We have Rembrandt Bugatti’s sculptures, Carlo’s furniture, and Lydia’s paintings,” says Mullin, “and, of course, cars by Ettore and Jean, and Roland’s carriages.” Architect David Hertz spent four years refitting the nearly 50,000-square-foot building—formerly publisher Otis Chandler’s transportation museum—with Art Deco–style architectural details.
