Ferrari enthusiasts may soon understand what Formula One champion Michael Schumacher experiences as he rips down the straightaway at Indianapolis or slices through Monaco’s turns. By early 2003, you will be able to slide into the cockpit of the Pininfarina-designed FX supercar, the successor to the limited edition F40 and F50.
The machine is so influenced by Ferrari’s F/1 program that you might be tempted to slap a Marlboro logo on the hood. For now, however, Ferraristi will have to settle for viewing the FX’s design prototype, which is on display through July 14 at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (+81.3.5245.4111, www.mot-art-museum.jp) as part of the exhibit Artedinamica: Ferrari and Maserati.
The FX, which will carry a price tag of more than $440,000 and have a production run of fewer than 350, will be unveiled in its production form at the Paris Auto Show in September. The car will feature an all–carbon fiber chassis and be powered by a 6-liter, 650-hp V-12 engine that will produce a top speed of 217 mph and a zero-to-60 time of under four seconds. When you shift through the gearbox with the F/1-styled paddles, you’ll swear you can see the checkered flag waving in the distance.
