In 1985, the very first BMW M3 rolled off the production line in Munich, Germany, as a high-performance version of the 3 Series coupe. Nearly 30 years later, BMW decided to discontinue the M3 coupe variant (the last one came out of the factory on July 5, 2013) in favor of a fresh designation: Enter the all-new 2015 BMW M4. Don’t worry, the BMW M3 is not dead; it lives on as a sedan-only model. The all-new 2015 M3 and M4 were born on the same day—BMW announced both models simultaneously at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in January.
These two cars share many of the same parts, including a 425 hp twin-turbocharged inline-6 engine and an aluminum hood that still sports a power bulge. And while the roof and drive shaft come standard with carbon fiber for both models (along with a carbon-fiber trunk lid on the M4), the M4 differentiates itself with a ducktail-style rear spoiler. This allows for both models to share similar aerodynamic properties for optimal handling.
The 2015 BMW M4 will begin arriving in dealerships in June (a convertible version will also be arriving before the end of summer), with a starting price of $65,000 for those who still prefer to row their own gears. The dual-clutch automatic transmission (a $2,900 option) remains one of the most seamless shifters on the market and helps the M4 reach 60 mph from a standstill in 3.9 seconds.
