For the consideration of those who believe the Maserati GranTurismo just can’t get any prettier, the famed Italian automaker submits the dazzling 2010 Maserati GranTurismo Convertible. Known in markets outside the United States as the GranCabrio, this is the first true four-seat drop-top in Maserati’s 95-year history and the third prong in its product trident, after the GranTurismo coupe and the Quattroporte sedan.
Beneath flowing bodywork created by coach builder Pininfarina, the convertible borrows the Ferrari-built 4.7-liter V-8 from the GranTurismo S, matched to a six-speed automatic transmission with manual actuation via paddles mounted behind the steering wheel. Sixty miles per hour arrives in a breezy 5.3 seconds, and with enough open road the speedometer needle will swing all the way to 176 mph. A power-operated cloth top folds away in just 28 seconds. Despite the loss of the GranTurismo coupe’s swept roofline, however, the convertible’s aerodynamic efficiency is surprisingly good: It boasts a drag coefficient of only 0.35 with the top up (0.39 top down).
As with Maserati’s other models, the GranTurismo Convertible’s potential for individualization is practically limitless, starting with major choices like paint (there are 14 possibilities), convertible top (six color options), and Poltrona Frau leather (10 choices), and leading to a raft of subtler decisions, such as the species of wood trim on the dashboard and the color of the brake calipers (there are five of each). Such laborious customization is surely worth the effort, however: With something close to 10 million possible combinations of color and trim, the chances that you’ll pull up alongside another car like yours are very small indeed.
