Polaris Launches the Slingshot Three-Wheeler

The aggressive new trike is expected to hit showrooms this fall…

The motorsports manufacturer Polaris—known for its off-road vehicles and snowmobiles, as well as the motorcycle brands Indian and Victory—has introduced its first three-wheeler, the Polaris Slingshot. Built in Spirit Lake, Iowa, the new trike is equipped with a 173 hp, 2.4-liter engine that generates 166 ft lbs of torque and is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Polaris has yet to reveal performance numbers, but the vehicle’s powerful engine and sub-1,700-pound dry weight are sure to result in an impressive zero-to-60-mph time.

Unlike its retro-styled competitor, the Robb Report Best of the Best–winning Morgan 3 Wheeler, the Slingshot features a cutting-edge exterior design that emphasizes sharp angles and an aggressive stance. Its low-slung steel chassis sits just 5 inches above the ground, resulting in a lower center of gravity, which improves handling. Electronic stability and traction control systems, along with antilock brakes, further enhance the driver’s control over the vehicle.

The Slingshot is available in two trim packages: the Slingshot and Slingshot SL. The base version ($20,000) is painted in what the company calls Titanium Metallic and fitted with 17-inch wheels in front and an 18-inch wheel at the rear. The upgraded Slingshot SL ($24,000) is painted in a vibrant red, features larger wheels, and is equipped with extras like a blade-style windshield and a media center that includes a 4.3-inch LCD screen, Bluetooth integration, a six-speaker audio system, and a back-up camera. Expect to see the new Polaris Slingshot in dealerships this fall. (www.polarisslingshot.com)
