Although the duPont family was better known for their advances in polymers and gunpowder, E. Paul duPont, grandson of the chemical company’s founder, was an avid automobile enthusiast and started his own car company in 1919. Only about 35 duPont cars are known to exist today. The 1931 duPont Model H Merrimac Sport Phaeton was made for the New York Auto Show of that year and is one of only three Model H examples ever built. It is owned by Richard Riegel and family of Bedford Hills, N.Y., and was awarded the Classic Car Club of America Trophy, as well as first place in the “Class D: duPont” category.
