1966 Ford GT40 P/1046 Mk II
The winner of this year’s special class celebrating the 50th anniversary of Ford’s victory at Le Mans is the very same 1966 Ford GT40 P/1046 Mk II that dubiously achieved that victory in 1966. Chassis P/1046, driven by Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon, was awarded first place at the 24 Hours of Le Mans after Ford racing boss Leo Beebe ordered three GTOs on track to finish simultaneously. The McLaren/Amon car edged ahead by a nose, robbing race leaders Ken Miles and Denny Hulme of the win. A year later, P/1046 was decommissioned after Lloyd Ruby crashed during the 24 Hours of Daytona; the car was later rebuilt as a road car and repainted with a gold metal-flake exterior. The current owner, Robert Kauffman of Charlotte, N.C., had the car restored to its original racing configuration. (pebblebeachconcours.net)
