For its second act, Tesla Motors introduced yet another stunner, a car that is perhaps more significant than its media-darling predecessor: the dramatic, battery-powered Tesla Model S sedan. The 4,647-pound Model S, which employs a single electric motor and a 1-speed transmission driving the rear wheels, reaches 60 mph in 5.4 seconds and hums to a top speed of 125 mph. The standard-issue battery pack will allow a 208-mile cruising range, but an optional upgrade augments that distance to 265 miles. Priced from $71,010, the Model S will charge from 110- or 240-volt outlets overnight. (www.teslamotors.com)
