Referred to as the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” the Indianapolis 500 holds pole position for prominence in motorsport competition. Since 1911, the world’s top drivers have redlined it around Indiana’s Indianapolis Motor Speedway, circling the 2.5-mile oval for 200 laps in an attempt to finish first. And although 2011 marked its centennial, the race did not occur during the United States’ involvement in World War II, so May 29 will be the 100th running of the famed 500.
