A drive in a Brabus K8 near the company’s headquarters in Bottrop, Germany, seemed destined for disappointment. Rain squalls and traffic slowed progress on the A31 autobahn, preventing the $170,000 K8, Brabus’ upgrade of the Mercedes-Benz SL55, from reaching its top speed of 185 mph.
Fortunately, the traffic eventually dissipated. Following a punch on the gas, power arrived in a smooth but controllable rush, accompanied by a glorious exhaust rumble. At the same time, the taut suspension made traveling at 170 mph as comfortable as a leisurely weekend drive in the country, even in the wet conditions.
