BMW’s round-the-world ready R1200GS and establishment-rocking S1000RR have garnered lots of attention as of late, but one of our favorite two-wheeled sleepers is the Bavarian manufacturer’s G650GS.
Built around a liquid-cooled, single-cylinder 652cc power plant, the G650GS is a Swiss Army knife of a bike that’s intended to appeal to both adventure-seeking diehards as well as urban commuter types. Its two-piston antilock brakes offer confidence-inspiring stops, while heated grips and a built-in power supply assist long-distance journeys. Generous suspension travel and a bridge-type frame are well suited to dual-purpose riding, and optional metallic saddlebags double as detachable, Zero Halliburton lookalike attachés. Very handy.
It may play underdog to BMW’s more glamorous models, but the G650GS is a versatile player that’s as purposeful as it is understated—qualities that make it world-class material in our book. (www.bmwmotorcycles.com)
