One of the details that distinguishes the 184-foot sailing yacht Selene is fairly invisible—intentionally so. The experienced yachting couple who commissioned the $40 million Perini Navi ketch enjoy their privacy, so they asked the Italian builder to create a corridor that runs along the vessel’s port side. Window blinds along a wall of the main salon can be opened to let in light from windows on the corridor’s other side, or they can be closed to allow the crew to traverse the length of the yacht without interrupting guests in the salon or adjacent bar area.
These guests are treated to an Art Deco decor featuring wenge and ebony woods, stainless steel, and leather. The look continues in the master suite, which extends the entire width of the vessel’s nearly 38-foot beam. In keeping with a wave motif that recurs throughout the yacht, a concave wall behind the king-size bed echoes convex woodwork along the opposite wall, and even the entry door has a curved frame. The owner’s office, sitting room, and king-size bed all occupy a single open area, but the space is so large that the three features appear as distinct as the adjacent his-and-hers bathroom. The yacht’s master suite and four guest cabins are decorated with black-and-white photographs of Lauren Bacall, Humphrey Bogart, and other movie stars of their era.
While Selene is comfortable and inviting both inside and out, her exterior is decidedly less formal than her interior. The yacht has an aft sitting area with a large flat-screen television and a second social space a few steps up. Shaded spots alternate with sun-drenched ones, including a hot tub.
Naval architect Ron Holland has designed a craft that reaches a top speed of 18 mph—exceptional performance for a vessel this size. Selene’s water toys include a jet tender, two Waverunners, two sailing dinghies, and two kayaks. Groups of as many as 12 can book Selene through Camper & Nicholsons International (954.524.4250, www.cn?connect.com) at a weekly base rate of about $300,000.
