Wining always matters, of course, but yacht crews will not focus exclusively on victory at the fifth annual Newport Bucket Regatta (www.newportbucket.com), which takes place July 20 through 22 on Rhode Island Sound. The organizers of the race, which is limited to 20 sailing yachts, each measuring at least 80 feet in length, encourage participants to enjoy themselves thoroughly. The regatta rules advise that “Protests will be frowned upon by the race committee. However, a protest will be heard if accompanied by a chilled case of Champagne.”

In 1904, railroad baron William K. Vanderbilt’s first son, William Vanderbilt Jr., established the Vanderbilt Cup, the first major trophy in American auto racing. Building on the Vanderbilt car connection, the Preservation Society of Newport County has established the William K. Vanderbilt Jr. Concours d’Elegance (www.newportmansions.org). The event, which the society hopes will be an annual one, will take place from July 27 through 29 in Newport and its environs.
