Expedition yachts have undergone a radical transformation over the last decade. The first supersize explorers were often supply vessels or commercial freighters that had been converted—often compromising comfort—into bare-bones, long-distance cruisers. These days, the modern explorer yacht has evolved into a go-anywhere vessel designed to reach the outer limits, with all the comforts and space of other superyachts.
The new Sanlorenzo 460EXP, which will debut at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show, is a great example of the fusion of an intrepid steel hull and an elegant motor-yacht interior. The MCA-compliant hull will have an ice-class designation with a cruising range of 4,000 nautical miles at 11 knots. The yacht will feature enhanced refrigeration and freezers (as is common on explorer yachts that can stay at sea for weeks) and a focus on fuel efficiency.
While the 138-footer can reach remote locations like the Galapagos or Antarctic, designer Francesco Paszkowski made sure to include all the features of a yacht that will be spending serious time in the Mediterranean as well. The expansive beach club includes a bar, a spa and sauna, a fitness area, and an endless-current swimming pool. The extended lower deck allows space for personal submarines, tenders, kayaks, scooters, or a car; and the explorer can also be equipped for scuba diving and offshore fishing. The layered three-deck configuration has two upper decks for alfresco dining or private sunbathing.
Floor-to-ceiling windows in the full-beam, 30-foot-wide saloon deliver a 360-degree view of surrounding waters, while owners enjoy an expansive master suite that includes his and her wardrobes and a large bathtub. The 460EXP can accommodate 10 to 12 guests, with additional quarters for up to nine crewmembers, providing best-in-class interior volume. The yacht is also classified as Green Plus, with battery packs that allow it to stay at anchor for considerable periods without turning on the generators or engines.
Sanlorenzo continues to break fresh ground with designs like the 460EXP. The Italian shipyard has a flair for innovation, but this new explorer yacht promises to push the expedition category forward with very thoughtful interior design and a go-anywhere steel hull. (sanlorenzoamericas.com)
