Imagine being able to cruise nonstop around the world on a luxury catamaran without ever having to fill a fuel tank. Silent Yachts’ new 79-footer is entirely solar powered, running on electric motors fueled by lithium batteries. Its 56 solar panels are positioned across the top deck from stem to stern, accounting for 1,000 square feet. Combining the catamaran hull design with advanced materials, the lightweight solar concept will be completed in March 2020. It is under construction at the Consorzio Navale shipyard in Italy. Other advantages of the electric engines include no loud diesel noise, heat buildup, or fumes. The 36-foot beam of this cat gives it excellent interior space, with five cabins for 10 guests. The 26-foot-wide forward suite for the owners has a bedroom, an en suite bathroom, a walk-in office, and extra storage. The interior by Marco Casali of Too Design features luxury appointments like a tiled shower in the master suite, bright, fun decor across the yacht, and plenty of wood joinery. The saloon is massive, measuring nearly 600 square feet, with a lounge and dining area. Depending on choice of engines, the 79 has a cruising speed of eight to 10 knots, with a top speed of 12 to 20 knots.
