The StanCraft Wooden Boat Co. was founded in 1933 by W.H. “Billy” Young and his son Stanley C. Young on Flathead Lake in Lakeside, Mont., where Stan produced some of boating’s most noteworthy designs. One such model was the 22-foot Torpedo, which Stan partly designed in Seattle during World War II, while he was working for Shane Co. boatbuilders. In 2008, the third generation—Amy Bloem—took over, with her husband, Robb. In northern Idaho they continue to build 14- to 50-foot, 100 percent handmade African mahogany boats. Model lines include the Rivelle Series, but StanCraft custom boats also can be made to order. Most boats take nine months to build. All models, whether part of a series or custom, allow you to choose colors and finish, with the exception of the stock boats that have already been produced. Boats can seat four to 24 people, and some models reach top speeds of more than 60 mph. Prices start at $47,500 for the 14-footer.
Showboating: Check out StanCraft at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Ariz. (January 24–31, 2016), or at the annual Spring Social at the factory every May.
