The Scubacraft hybrid water vehicle lends itself to marine research and other practical applications, but this versatile new machine can also serve as the ultimate summer plaything for megayacht owners. As a svelte surface tender, the craft can exceed 50 knots when equipped with an optional 250 hp supercharged engine. But the Scubacraft offers its biggest thrills below the waves: At the press of a button, the vessel can descend to depths of 100 feet. Once underwater, the submersible utilizes four electric thrusters to reach speeds up to three knots for journeys as long as 90 minutes. The open-cockpit design allows owners to forgo most of the rigorous training needed to pilot pressurized vessels, although full scuba gear and certification are required for the driver and two passengers. The first Scubacraft model, the SC3, will be available for delivery next year at prices from $120,000.
