Best of the Best 2013: Jewelry: Retailer: Louis Vuitton Place Vendôme

When Louis Vuitton decided to create its first jewelry-and-watch salon, which opened last year, the brand selected the world’s most prestigious address for high-jewelry houses: the Place Vendôme in Paris. The architect Peter Marino transformed an 18th-century townhouse into a contemporary masterpiece, whose warm rosewood paneling, tobacco-colored leather walls, and commissioned works of art by Teresita Fernandez, Farhad Moshiri, and Rashid Rana furnish a serene backdrop for glittering jewels. The top two levels house a workshop where dozens of artisans bring the designs of Lorenz Bäumer, the artistic director, to shimmering life. Some of Bäumer’s elegant pieces even incorporate geometric patterns inspired by the historic Place Vendôme itself. Clockwise from top: a tourmaline-and-diamond bead necklace; a yellow-sapphire-and-diamond ring; and a ring with pink and red spinels, pink sapphires, diamonds, and lacquer.
