Although the Porsche Macan Turbo (porsche.com) was not one of the entrants in Robb Report’s 2015 Car of the Year contest in Napa Valley last fall, the event nevertheless showcased the vehicle. This high-performance version of Porsche’s new compact SUV served as the chase vehicle for the eventual winner, the Porsche 918 Spyder. It was a daunting role, given the 918’s speed and agility, but the Macan Turbo met the challenge and earned the admiration of many judges.
The Macan Turbo, which has a starting price of just under $74,000, is powered by a twin-turbo V-6 that churns out 400 hp and 406 ft lbs of torque, enabling it to sprint from zero to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 164 mph. The engine is paired with Porsche’s PDK 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Sport mode produces quicker engine response, tighter gear changes, and more agile handling. The vehicle also has an off-road setting, which raises the suspension, stiffens the shocks, and alters the throttle response and traction control.
