Any aspiring railroad baron would covet the model train layout that the privately owned Carail museum (313.273.5507, www.carail.com) in Detroit is auctioning off. The layout, from the extensive collection belonging to museum founder and owner and onetime Lionel trains chairman and CEO Richard Kughn, covers 3,000 square feet and includes more than 20 O-gauge trains operating simultaneously over mountains, rivers, tunnels, and trestles. “I thought it was time to let other people play with it,” says Kughn, who is selling his entire collection and closing the museum. The set is expected to fetch about $300,000.

The auction, which is being conducted by RM Auctions (800.211.4371, www.rmauctions.com) and will take place September 19 through 21, will also feature vintage toys, automobile memorabilia, and the museum’s 50 classic cars, including a 1939 Lincoln V12 custom convertible sedan designed for King George VI.
