The $74,000 Sveid corkscrew (www.sveid.com) might be more expensive than any bottle of wine it will open—but it can be used more than once. The complex titanium device, which removes a cork by means of an accordion-like motion, is constructed from 52 handmade pieces, including a fingertip lever formed from platinum or 18-karat gold. It comes in a box made of wood (palm or ebony), shagreen, and crystal. Both the corkscrew and box are made to order, numbered, and signed by the Swiss designer, Frank Sveid, who plans to limit production to 100.
