FrontRunners: Nice Twists

When selecting items for their exhibit on rococo design, curator Gail Davidson and her colleagues employed the SOS method: “Our choices,” she says, “had to be sinuous, organic, and sensuous.” More than 300 pieces of furniture, porcelain, silverware, jewelry, and decorative art appear in Rococo: The Continuing Curve, 1730–2008, on display at Manhattan’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum (www.cooperhewitt.org) through July 6. The exhibit covers both the original rococo movement and several rococo revivals—times, Davidson says, when designers felt the need to subvert “the tyranny of the right angle.”
