Robb Design Portfolio: Alessi Is More

<< Back to Robb Report, Classic Revivals

It has been 20 years since 11 unknown architects (Michael Graves and Aldo Rossi among them) introduced elegant silver tea and coffee sets to the world. This year, Alessi unveiled its Tea and Coffee Towers created by a new clutch of architects. The services, made in limited editions of 99, range from a titanium flower by Greg Lynn to Wiel Arets’ set of silver sheathed in thermoplastic resin.

“It’s a healthy, exciting time in architecture, and the new materials and technology reflect that,” says Max Protetch, who exhibited the first Alessi show in 1983 and has the current series at his New York gallery. “Coating silver is outrageous and beautiful, and it means you never have to polish it.”
