Swann Auction Galleries to Sell Matchbooks and Other Imagery Oddities

The Vernacular Imagery, Photobooks & Fine Photographs auction is scheduled for December 11…

The conceptual artist Barbara Kruger is known for pairing strong photographic imagery with politically charged slogans that reference mass culture. Her ephemeral works—appearing on shopping bags, CD covers, and even coffee mugs—“are now recognized as collectible objects in their own right,” according to Daile Kaplan, vice president and director of photographs and photo books at Swann Auction Galleries. “They reflect how printmaking techniques can make art available to a broad audience.”

A grouping of 23 Kruger matchbooks from 1986 will be offered at Swann’s Vernacular Imagery, Photobooks & Fine Photographs auction in New York City on December 11; the collection is estimated to sell for $600 to $900. Labeled with Krugerisms such as “Your manias become science” and “Surveillance is your busywork,” each of the miniature images provides something to mull over. Bidders who cannot attend can also participate live by phone or place bids in advance or online. (swanngalleries.com)
