A Bed Fit for a King

The Swedish company Hästens began life as a fine saddler in 1852 and, with ready access to horsehair, created mattresses on the side. With the displacement of horses as modes of transport, the sideline segued into a primary business, and 100 years later it became the official supplier of beds to the kings and queens of Sweden. Today the firm is famous for the unparalleled luxury of its beds, each of which is still made up of multiple layers of cotton, wool, and hand-placed horsehair. Like earlier models, the newest Continental Bed Collection–the Luxuria, Excelsior II, and 2000T II (ranging from $8,450 to $23,250 for queen versions)–is completely nontoxic and free of foam or latex. Even the fire retardant used is natural: salt rather than chemicals. They can be customized to size and shape (including round) and are available in Hästens’ iconic blue-and-white checked fabric or 20 other colors. (+46 0 221 274 00, hastens.com)
