American-Crafted Furniture with a Myriad of Inspirations

The newest collection from the North Carolina–based firm Councill features an eclectic mix of furniture inspired by various periods, from ancient Greco-Roman to Bauhaus, all made in America with rich, sensual materials. A Klismos chair renders the venerable classical Greek design in hardwood veneer and ruched raw silk upholstery. The Deco-inspired Josef chest is mahogany, its white lacquer urn-shape overlay recalling the work of Deco master Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann. Josie, a two-part stepped chest with Macassar ebony veneer, opens to reveal interiors of yellow lacquer, although it can also be ordered in orange, clover green, and gray. Overall, the look of each piece ($6,000 to $15,000) is posh. Councill offers all its furniture in a variety of finishes, and the firm enthusiastically encourages customization.
