Art Basel Miami Beach: Design Miami

A 65,700-square-foot tent across from Art Basel’s exhibition space at the Miami Beach Convention Center housed Design Miami, a more manageable forum for visitors to browse offerings created specifically for the show. Highlights this year included the Brazilian architect Guilherme Torres’s Swarovski-sponsored Mangue Groove, inspired by the forests of Brazil and crafted from Swarovski crystals; the Dutch designer Simon Heijdens’s Phare No. 1–9, a piece sponsored by Perrier-Jouët comprising nine suspended blown-glass vessels; and Design Miami’s 2009 Designer of the Year Maarten Baas’s Grandfather Clock, which combines video art with function to make it appear as though a man behind frosted glass changes the time every minute by hand. www.designmiami.com
