Best of the Best 2012: Bathroom: Bisazza Bagno

Last year’s arrival of Bisazza Bagno, a new bath division from the Italian mosaics company Bisazza, introduced unprecedented artistry to the room that needed it most. The company’s first two collections feature rich materials, unusual shapes, and ornate mirrors, lamps, and other accessories that would be just as desirable in a living or dining room. “Most bathrooms are purely functional, and I think that’s wrong,” says Spanish designer Jaime Hayon, whose Hayon Collection was Bisazza Bagno’s inaugural series.

Debuted in May of last year, the Hayon Collection ($150 to $9,700) is an Art Deco–meets-modern design that puts the line’s Carrera marble countertops, shiny gold-and-chrome ceramic basins, and hand-lacquered wood cabinets on stunning display. Several of the furnishings feature delicate, curvaceous legs that Hayon describes as “ballerina-like,” while other finely detailed pieces include intricate laser-cut mirrors, sculptural clothes hangers, and handpainted ceramic lamps.

Equally striking is Dutch designer Marcel Wanders’s eponymous collection, which Bisazza unveiled last September. Heavy baroque influences create an almost theatrical setting featuring elaborately embellished consoles and mirrors made of lacquered wood, and a crystal chandelier–cum-showerhead with LED lights. Rubenesque bathtubs and washbasins with bright red accents (pictured) resemble oversize bars of soap, hinting at Wanders’s sense of humor. Like the Hayon line, the Wanders series ($230 to $15,100) bears a glossy black-and-white color scheme and employs sleek fixtures and wall-mounted toilets.

One detail intentionally missing from both Bisazza Bagno lines is Bisazza’s signature tile. “What is most important is that each collection is able to live by itself, without the help of mosaic,” Hayon says. That approach to the design, he suggests, attests the company’s trailblazing style. “We are the pioneers in the new direction of the bathroom,” says Hayon. “[The collections] aren’t for people who merely want a solution. These are iconic pieces that are not just functional, but also create a beautiful and joyful room.”
