In the dozen years since Oki Sato founded the Tokyo-based firm Nendo, he has been commissioned by a number of luxury brands—Armani, Boffi, and Cartier among them—seeking his Japanese minimalist aesthetic for their products. In January, the 36-year-old architect added Baccarat to that list of clients, creating a chess set ($32,000) to commemorate the crystal maker’s 250th anniversary this year.
