In most cases, tables have four legs. It’s a tried-and-true design that’s worked for thousands of years, bringing people together for dinner, a board game or a round of cocktails.
On the other hand, rules were meant to be broken. Some savvy architects and designers have opted to ditch this long-held wisdom and create tables held up by only one leg instead of four. This sort of approach creates a cantilever, so the table’s entire weight is held up by one leg at the far side. It’s a very difficult thing to pull off, as the table could easily capsize or collapse if the math is off, but incredibly impressive to display in a home.
Part furniture and part sculpture, these cantilevered pieces run the gamut from raw marble marvels to meticulously cast bronze low tables. Here, a few of our favorites—make sure to place them somewhere where they can be properly admired in your home.
