The Badminton Chair ($13,000), part of the Ann Getty House Collection (415.345.0230, www.anngettyhouse.com), is an exquisite example of the chinoiserie style, an interpretation of Chinese furniture that was popular in Europe during the 18th century. The chair, with its lacquered frame, Chinese calligraphy, and pagoda-shaped flourish, is an exact reproduction—save for the upholstery—of a piece that belonged to a suite of bedroom furniture made circa 1752 for Badminton House in Gloucestershire, England. (The sport was invented at the country estate.) “Their appeal is in their simple lines,” says Getty, who has two of the original chairs from the suite in her San Francisco living room. The Winter Garden chair ($11,700) (right ), which has a chalky off-white paint and parcel-gilt finish, is based on a rare Chinese Chippendale example from 1760. “I see this in a more casual breakfast room,” says Getty, “one surrounded by palm trees.”
