The MoMA Design Store’s Top 5 of 2017
From a Karl Lagerfeld collab to a concrete speaker, the world-class art institution brought it.

Just as the trend forecasts and big predictions for the New Year roll in, we thought it best to look back at a few design hits before 2017 fades into a champagne-soaked oblivion. For good intel, we turn to the scholarly and straight-up source: The Museum of Modern Art. Specifically, the MoMA Design Store. A destination for one-off, historically important, and exclusively produced pieces, MoMA’s décor haven is not the typical gift shop. The buyers collaborate closely with the museum’s curators, which lends a certain gravitas to the selections. The vetting process feels different from other high-end retailers, as every object is chosen only if it has the right mix of form and function. When we asked what was major in 2017, the MoMA Design Store graciously revealed the store’s top luxury sellers. It’s a refined taste of the design zeitgeist, and a reminder that not everything from this year was a total and utter surprise.
