The last few years have seen a surge of furniture brands from Portugal. It’s the design equivalent of the Beatles invading the airwaves. Brands like Boca do Lobo, Delightfull, and Maison Valentina are proving they’ve got some gilded moves with big, statement-making designs that have been as sensational as they are catchy. Architects Sofia Pinho Santos and Rui Moreira Santos founded Royal Stranger nearly five years ago, and swiftly went about the business of fusing smooth lines and jagged edges like no big thing. The limited-edition Honeycomb cabinet is a pixelated, lacquered design freefall with a gold interior (and now fashioned in black and white). The duo is clearly enjoying the furniture-making experience, enlisting all the technical and newfangled in order to produce pieces with real oomph. It an undeniable joyride into what-will-they-do-next, and visiting their booth was a good reminder that attention-grabbing design isn’t always a pithy exercise – there’s a real thought-process at work here.
