What’s Hot: Vertical Living in Los Angeles

Top designers are bringing high style to some of Los Angeles’s newest residential buildings.

BEVERLY WEST The Project: Thirty-five units spread out over 22 floors overlooking the Los Angeles Country Club. Completed in 2012, the building has units still available for sale. The homes range from 1,700 square feet to 8,215 square feet, and each has a dedicated elevator that opens directly into the residence. Design options include Portuguese limestone floors, European wide-plank floors, Spanish sandstone, and Italian marble. The building offers a 24-hour staffed lobby, a doorman, a fitness center, and an outdoor pool with a landscaped lounge area. Designer Units: Five homes feature respectively the furnishings of David Sutherland, Christian Liaigre, Ralph Lauren, James Perse, and Armani/Casa. Prices: Starting at $1.5 million. THE RITZ-CARLTON RESIDENCES AT L.A. LIVE The Project: More than 200 units located on the upper floors (27 through 52) of the Ritz-Carlton, Los Angeles, in the heart of downtown, within walking distance of the Staples Center. The 50 units still available for sale in the building, which was completed in 2010, range from 960 square feet to 4,300 square feet and include Snaidero kitchens and Gaggenau appliances. Additionally, a two-story, 5,862-square-foot penthouse has purposely been left as raw space as a blank slate for the prospective buyer. All owners have access to a private fitness center, as well as hotel amenities such as valet service, the spa, and the 26th-floor outdoor pool. The Hollywood high-rise affords views of the Hollywood sign, the Capitol Records building, downtown Los Angeles, and the ocean. A one-third-acre deck on the 16th floor provides lounge areas, an outdoor kitchen, a pool, and a dog park, all exclusively for owners. The structure houses 88 rental units ranging from 801 square feet to 4,000 square feet. Amenities and benefits include a rooftop saltwater pool, a spa and garden, a fitness center, concierge and valet services, and a doorman. Designer Unit: The designer Waldo Fernandez (Spago, Soho House Los Angeles) outfitted the penthouse with midcentury modern–inspired furnishings. Prices: Starting in the mid $4,000s per month. THE AVENUE The Project: Debuted in early 2012, with 172 studio and one- and two-bedroom units, from 716 square feet to 2,373 square feet, and eight two-story penthouses, from 2,034 square feet to 2,373 square feet. Though the development had been conceived as whole-ownership condominiums, it was ultimately revamped as rental apartments. Amenities and benefits include a courtyard pool and sundeck, a fitness center, and concierge services. Designer Unit: Timothy Matthew Morrison outfitted the model penthouse with custom California modern furnishings and art; the design can be replicated and modified for any of the building’s units.
