Of a magnitude similar to Oahu’s massive surf, Turtle Bay’s $50 million renovation is bringing a new wave of refinement to the luxury retreat. The sole resort on the island’s famed North Shore, its comprehensive renewal has so far included its beach cottages, dining venues, 410 guest rooms, an expanded fitness center and spa, and the installation of 1,600 solar panels—and an incoming set of improvements is on the horizon.
After recently refreshing its Ocean Villas (with full kitchens) and Premier Rooms, Turtle Bay worked with the architects and interior design team at Honolulu-based Group 70 International to transform its 42 beach cottages (located feet from the ocean) into haute Hawaiian homes. The 740-square-foot interiors are defined by 15-foot vaulted ceilings, Brazilian walnut flooring, private lanais, and marble bathrooms with deep Kalista soaking tubs. Accompanying the accoutrements is a dedicated concierge service exclusive to cottage guests.
As an epicurean enhancement, master chef Roy Yamaguchi (who introduced Hawaiian fusion to the culinary world) has paired with the property to present Roy’s Beach House, situated on the sand at Turtle Bay’s Kuilima Cove. The James Beard Award–winner is currently developing the design and menu for his restaurant, projected to open this summer.
The cove will also be the site for elevated levels of leisure, as a new beach experience (set to open this spring) will feature 100 chaise lounges; 16 Soldura daybeds with shades; custom-made Academy cabanas with curtains; and shower stations. And for pursuits more kinetic in nature, Turtle Bay now offers a carefully crafted mountain-bike park in the banyan groves to complement its existing list of active amenities, such as its 36-hole championship golf course, 12 miles of hiking trails, and proximity to some of the finest surfing on the planet.
