In 1952, Marilyn Monroe told Life magazine that her bedtime attire consisted of Chanel No. 5 and nothing else. With that famous remark, the Hollywood star turned the spotlight on the fragrance, which the Russian perfumer Ernest Beaux had created for Chanel in 1921 using a complex blend of aldehydes and floral notes, including May rose, ylang-ylang, Grasse jasmine, lily of the valley, and iris, as well as a warm base of Bourbon vetiver, sandalwood, vanilla, amber, and patchouli. 

Today No. 5 is widely considered the most famous fragrance of all time, and now the brand’s loyalists have another Chanel creation to buzz about: Fresh from the French luxury-goods house, Chanel No. 5 Grand Extrait Crystal ($15,000) is the famed scent presented in a notable limited-edition package. Each of the 50 bottles is a sizable 30.4-ounce flacon hand-etched by a French crystal maker, sealed with wax to preserve the signature fragrance’s integrity, and ensconced in a lambskin-lined coffret. Like its legendary fan, the perfume promises to become even more alluring with the passage of time.
