Merino sheep earned the sobriquet “the gift of kings” in the 18th century, when Charles IV of Spain gave several of the fine-wooled animals to fellow royalty in other European nations. Today a wool called the Gift of Kings is the newest material enticement from the luxury clothier Loro Piana (loropiana.com). The superfine wool (12 microns in diameter) graces a limited series of outerwear, sweaters, and scarves, including this Yorkshire jacket ($23,785) and burgundy scarf ($2,875).
