Ghurka Releases Custom-Made Trunks to Celebrate Its 40th Anniversary

The calfskin-leather trunks pay homage to the brand's earliest designs...

In the early 1970s, Ghurka founder Marley Hodgson bid on military gear made by a Ghurka soldier stationed in India decades earlier. Inspired by the fine leather and premier craftsmanship, he created a similar leather knapsack for his son, marking the founding of his American leather-goods company. To celebrate its 40th anniversary, Ghurka is releasing eight different types of hard-sided, custom-made trunks that evoke the brand’s original designs.

Handmade by artisan craftsmen in Florence, Italy, the trunks are fashioned from calfskin leather and lined with 100-percent-cotton twill. The locks are made from nickel-plated, solid-brass hardware and fittings. The yellow, black, and white stripes on each trunk are reminiscent of military ribbons used by Ghurka fighters in the British Army.

While an entire eight-piece set is $55,000, the trunks can be purchased separately as well. And bespoke trunks with different colors or anagram options can be commissioned. The collection will be available in September. (ghurka.com)
