Refined Denim

When Ardie Ulukaya launched the 34 Heritage denim brand in the United States just over a year ago, the goal was to create a gentleman’s pant collection that combined the casual look and feel of jeans with the comfort of a trouser. To accomplish his goal, the 42-year-old fashion veteran, working in collaboration with Istanbul-based Mavi Jeans, added a stretch component to the cotton fiber that allows his pants to move in all the right places. This season Ulukaya has added yet another new dimension to the 34 Heritage label with the launch of cashmere denim, a proprietary 10-ounce fabric developed by the Turkish textile giant ISKO. Made of high-twist combed cotton combined with 2.5 percent Lycra, the sturdy denim fabric gets its name from the delicate washing and brushed-finishing process that produces the soft hand and gentle drape of fine cashmere. Priced around $175 and sold through top specialty retailers like Gene Hiller in Sausalito, Calif., Fairfield Clothiers of Fairfield, Conn., and at select Ritz-Carlton resorts, 34 Heritage cashmere jeans are offered in two washes (light and dark blue) and four fits—from the comfort-rise Charisma and mid-rise Confidence to the straight-leg Courage and tapered-leg Cool.
