Scott Hill Returns to Los Angeles Scene

Like Wilkes Bashford in San Francisco, Mitchells in Greenwich, and Jeffrey in New York, Scott Hill has been an iconic retailer in Los Angeles for more than 20 years. So it came as somewhat of a surprise three years ago when the style-savvy store owner shuttered his Sunset Boulevard shop to take what appeared to be a long sabbatical from the world of high-end menswear. But, in fact, he didn’t really leave the retail world. He quietly opened Scott Hill Bespoke, a by-appointment wardrobe consultancy operated out of his Malibu living room. “Every few weeks I’d pack a suitcase and go all over the country to visit with customers in New York, San Francisco, Vermont, and other states while also trying to service my best customers here in Los Angeles,” says Hill, whose success on the road convinced him that there was a definite audience for a more personal kind of selling. Now, Scott Hill Bespoke has literally found a home away from home with a new, intimate, 900-square-foot shop on North Camden Drive in Beverly Hills. Focusing on made-to-order Neapolitan suits, shirts, knitwear, and footwear, the shop stocks more fabric swatches and storyboards than inventory, so a gentleman can use his imagination to design his own wardrobe.

“It’s a little like coming into my living room,” says Hill, who consults with every client to determine the details—peak or notch lapels, lining or no lining, besom or patch pockets—before the suit is made. “Since everything is made-to-measure, we can spend the extra 20 minutes to select just the right horn buttons that will pick up the marbling of the jacket’s fabric,” he says. Nevertheless, some things never change. “A lot of rich men in Hollywood dress in baseball caps and tennis shoes because they think if they wear a suit or a jacket it makes them look like someone’s employee,” says Hill, adding how he also stocks casual jackets and custom denim with exactly this customer in mind.
