A Family Portrait

The year was 1923 when Louis Lafont opened a small boutique selling spectacles and hearing aids on Rue Vignon in the Madeleine district of Paris. For four generations, the great grandfather’s art deco spirit has set the standard when it comes to designing eyewear

The optical boutique was later passed on to Louis’ grandson Philippe who married Laurence a Parisian fashion designer. Laurence’s mastery and deep understanding of textiles, fabrics and design combined with Philippe’s optical know-how, created a partnership and a true marriage between fashion and optical. In 1973 the “Lunettes Lafont” brand was established.  By the end of the 70’s, their elegant innovative frames were attracting the attention of fashionistas in the rue Cambron and abroad. The design studio produced many innovative products and began to work with major fashion houses such as Hermès and Chanel. This Paris institution now operates four shops under its own name and exports to over 40 countries worldwide.



Made In France

Lafont eyewear collections all have one thing in common:  a subtly rebellious, discreetly avant-garde touch of refinement.  A Parisian sense of style that never fails to surprise thanks to over 200 unique color combinations.  Eighty percent of the colors in the Lafont acetate and metal collection are absolutely exclusive, thanks to the creation of original patterns and assortments from the Parisian based Lafont Design Studio lead by Chief Designer Thomas Lafont.  A continuous process of research and development keeps the collection fresh and fashionable.

As a true optical fashion house, Lafont unveils over 30 new models each season.  Each style is expertly hand crafted in a manufacturing facility in the Jura region of the French Alps.  The creation of a frame is an arduous task.  “A diagram takes 30 seconds, a drawing takes 2 hours, technical drawings 10 days, prototype 1 month, and manufacturing take 8 to 16 weeks” says Chief Designer Thomas Lafont.  One pair of glasses takes 8 to 16 weeks and involves 120 to 220 successive operations, depending on the complexity of the product.  To distinguish their product Lafont takes great care in the precision of its assembly the attention to its finish and the balance of the designs.

The end result is a Lafont design that is a true expression of the Parisian “Art de vivre.”  The celebration of family tradition, superb craftsmanship and unique distinguished tastes are all elements found in every Lafont frame.
